Big Beach Clean: September 2018

Thank you and well done to all from 8ú Calafort who participated in the Big Beach Clean 2018. As part of a national initiative, the 8ú Calafort team spent half an hour removing litter from the vicinity of Dún Laoghaire Inner Harbour, and collected the following:

94 cigarette butts

79 aluminium cans

74 plastic bags

55 food wrappers

40 plastic bottles

25 paper bags

23 plastic forks/knives/spoons

21 metal bottle caps

20 paper cups/plates

18 glass bottles

17 plastic bottle caps

15 plastic lids

9 plastic cups/plates

5 plastic take-away containers

5 foam cups/plates

4 fishing lines

4 straws/stirrers

2 foam take-away containers

2 ropes

1 fishing buoy

1 fishing net

This substantial amount of waste was all either in the water or in the vicinity of the water, but has now been removed and properly disposed of to prevent it from further damaging our environment.

Manannán Summer Camp 2018

Manannán News

This year’s Summer Camp will be based on Loch Arbhach, Co. Sligo. Manannán will camp from 13-22 July.

Times

All Scouts are required to participate in camp preparations in the week leading up to camp. The times are as follows:

Wednesday 11 July, 1000 – boats to be recovered from water

Thursday 12 July, 1300 – truck day; all boats and camp equipment will be loaded onto the truck

All Scouts must be in the Den at 0900 on Friday 13 July, wearing their neckerchief and Manannán t-shirt. Everyone will need to bring a packed lunch for Friday.

We expect to be back in the Den by 1730 on Sunday 22 July.

 

Gear list

All gear should be packed lined with bin liners in case of rain.

Wash bag/toiletries (please note: products which contain micro-beads are banned)

Sun cream

Insect repellent

Torch (with spare batteries)

Bowl, cup, spoon, knife, fork

Tea towel x2

Spending money (no more than €5)

Mobile phones are NOT PERMITTED on this camp and will be confiscated for the duration of camp.

 

Cost

The total cost of Summer Camp is €220 (including €50 deposit). The balance is due on Friday 29 June; this can be paid in cash or by a cheque payable to ‘GASOGA MARA 8’.

 

If any Scout has to arrive late or leave camp early for any reason, this must be brought to the attention of the Section Leaders by Friday 6 July.

Scouts should contact their Watch Leader with any questions.

Malahide sailing trip: June 2018

Manannán sailing trip

Manannán News

Manannán will be going on a sailing weekend to Malahide over the June bank holiday weekend, 2-3 June, staying overnight in Malahide Sea Scout Den on Saturday 2 June. Please note that this trip is strictly weather-permitting and is subject to last-minute cancellation.

Times:

We will need to depart early on Saturday 2 June due to tides so we will be meeting in the Den at 0730, before sailing to Malahide. Scouts should make sure they have a big breakfast before they leave for the Den as it will be a long sail to Malahide.

We will stay overnight in Malahide Sea Scout Den, before sailing back to Dún Laoghaire on Sunday 3 June. We expect to be finished in the Den on Sunday at around 1830.

Cost:

All Scouts must bring spending money of around €10 as we will be getting dinner in the chipper in Malahide. There is no further cost for this trip.

 

Scouts are reminded that they must have completed their Swim Test before this trip. If Scouts have any questions they should contact their Watch Leader.

Once again, this trip is entirely weather-permitting and is subject to last-minute cancellation.
