News concerning the Manannán Scout troop

Summer Camp 2016 (Manannán)

Manannán News

This year’s Summer Camp will be based on Loch Síleann, Co. Cavan. Manannán will camp from 15-24 July.

Times

All Scouts are expected to participate in camp preparations in the week leading up to camp. The times are as follows:

Wednesday 13 July, 1900 – boats to be recovered from water

Thursday 14 July, 1300 – truck day; all boats and camp equipment will be loaded onto the truck

All Scouts must be in the Den at 0900 on Friday 15 July, wearing full uniform with hiking boots instead of black shoes. Everyone will need to bring a packed lunch for Friday.

We expect to be back in the Den by 1530 on Sunday 24 July.

 

Gear list

All gear should be packed lined with bin liners in case of heavy rain.

Cost

The total cost of Summer Camp is €220 (including €50 deposit). The balance must be paid by Friday 8 July; this can be paid in cash or by a cheque payable to ‘GASOGA MARA 8’.

 

If any Scout has to arrive late or leave camp early for any reason, this must be brought to the attention of the Section Leaders by Friday 8 July.

Manannán Howth Sail: June 2016

Over the June bank holiday weekend, Manannán sailed from Dún Laoghaire to Howth, and stayed overnight in the Howth Scout Den before sailing home. The fleet consisted of Yahtzee, New Moon, Pandora, Rua, 2 RS Ventures from the N.Y.C. and a 1720 from the R.I.Y.C.

Howth Sailing Trip 4-5 June (Manannán)

Manannán will be going on a sailing weekend to Howth over the June bank holiday weekend, 4-5 June. We need confirmation of attendance on this trip by the meeting on Friday, 27 May.

Times:

We will be meeting in the Den at 1300 on Saturday 4 June, before sailing to Howth. We will overnight in Howth’s Scout Den, before sailing back to Dún Laoghaire via Ireland’s Eye on Sunday 5 June. We expect to be finished in the Den on Sunday at 1500.

Cost:

All Scouts must bring spending money of around €10 as we will be getting dinner in the chipper in Howth. There is no further cost for this trip.

 

Scouts are reminded that they must have done their Swim Test before this trip. If Scouts have any questions they should contact their Watch Leader.

Manannán meetings extended

Manannán News

As boatwork is now complete and the fleet certified for the year, Manannán will begin boating next Friday, 20 May. Please note that from now until the end of the boating season, Manannán meetings will run from 1900-2130.

In addition to full uniform as usual, all Scouts are required to bring boating gear every week, including: PFD, light waterproof jacket/’cag’, rash-vest/base-layer/old t-shirt, swimming shorts, boating shoes/booties/old runners that can get wet.

Any Scout who has not yet completed this year’s Swim Test will do it on Friday.

Our next activity will be our sailing weekend to Howth, on 4-5 June. More details will be provided closer to the time.

50-Year Anniversary Camp (Manannán)

Times:

Manannán will be meeting at 1700 in the Den on Friday, 29 April, with lifts leaving for Lough Dan at around 1800. All Scouts are asked to have had dinner before they go, and to bring a packed lunch for later that evening. All Scouts must arrive down in full uniform, with hiking boots instead of black shoes.

We expect to be leaving Lough Dan on Monday 2 May at 1200, and to be finished in the Den at 1330.

Please note that due to the amount of people expected on site over the weekend, cars will not have access to the main car park in Lough Dan, and will instead be directed to the nearby Jamboree Field for set-down.

Commando Course 2016:

This year’s Commando Course will be run as part of the 50-Year Anniversary Camp. Please refer to the gear list for this event.

 

Cost:

The total cost of this trip is €40 (including €10 deposit). We will collect the balance of €30 during the meeting on Friday, 22 April.

Manannán Swim Test 15 April

Manannán News

Manannán will have their annual Swim Test during the meeting on Friday, 15 April.

The Swim Test is compulsory for all Scouts, to ensure that Scouts can swim without a lifejacket for 50m, and thereafter remain afloat for 2 minutes.

In addition to full uniform as normal, Scouts should bring a towel, swimming shorts, an old t-shirt/rash vest, and old runners/boating shoes.

Scouts should contact their Watch Leader if they have any questions.

Please be reminded that a non-refundable deposit of €10 is due on Friday, 8 April, in order to confirm attendance on the 8ú Calafort 50-Year Anniversary Camp, which takes place in Lough Dan from 29 April – 2 May.

 

 

Campa na Cásca (Manannán)

Manannán News

Manannán will be camping in Powerscourt for Easter weekend, from Friday 25 March until Monday 28 March.

Scouts must come down to the Den on the Friday in full uniform, with hiking boots instead of black shoes.

Times:

We will be meeting in the Den at 10:00 on Friday 25 March, with lifts leaving for Powerscourt between 10:30 and 11:00. We expect to be leaving Powerscourt on Monday 28 March at 11:00, and finished putting gear away in the Den at 12:00. Watch Leaders will arrange lifts to and from Powerscourt for their watch.

New members are reminded that they will be formally invested into Manannán over Easter Camp by making the Scout Promise. All Scouts must have full uniform for this.
