Anglesey Hostelling Trip (Manannán) – update

Manannán News

Manannán will be going on a hostelling trip to Wales for 2 nights, on the 4-6 November.

We will be getting the ferry from Dublin Port to Holyhead on the Friday afternoon, 4 November, and returning to Dublin by ferry on the Sunday afternoon, 6 November. We will be staying in Anglesey Outdoors hostel, and activities will be arranged through the hostel. The itinerary will be as follows:

The total cost of this trip will be €150, with a cost breakdown as follows:

  • Transport (ferry): €39
  • Accomodation (hostel): €32
  • Activities: €45
  • Food: €20
  • Miscellaneous: €14
  • =Total cost: €150

As this is an international trip, every Scout must have (i) a valid passport and (ii) appropriate travel insurance. Please note that travel insurance is available through Scouting Ireland for an additional €10.60 if required. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not required for Irish citizens visiting the UK, but a form of identification (i.e. passport) is required.

In order to complete the required paperwork for National Office, we will need confirmation of attendance for each Scout by no later than Friday 9 September as to whether or not each Scout is going on this trip. To confirm attendance on this trip, please return the following to the Section Leaders before the above date:

  • Non-refundable deposit of €50
  • Photocopy of valid passport
  • Photocopy of details of appropriate travel insurance OR request for Scouting Ireland Travel Insurance

The balance will then need to be paid to the Section Leaders by Friday 14 October. Cheques must be made out to ‘GASOGA MARA 8’.

Summer Camp 2016 (Manannán)

This year’s Summer Camp will be based on Loch Síleann, Co. Cavan. Manannán will camp from 15-24 July.

Times

All Scouts are expected to participate in camp preparations in the week leading up to camp. The times are as follows:

Wednesday 13 July, 1900 – boats to be recovered from water

Thursday 14 July, 1300 – truck day; all boats and camp equipment will be loaded onto the truck

All Scouts must be in the Den at 0900 on Friday 15 July, wearing full uniform with hiking boots instead of black shoes. Everyone will need to bring a packed lunch for Friday.

We expect to be back in the Den by 1530 on Sunday 24 July.

 

Gear list

All gear should be packed lined with bin liners in case of heavy rain.

Cost

The total cost of Summer Camp is €220 (including €50 deposit). The balance must be paid by Friday 8 July; this can be paid in cash or by a cheque payable to ‘GASOGA MARA 8’.

 

If any Scout has to arrive late or leave camp early for any reason, this must be brought to the attention of the Section Leaders by Friday 8 July.

Manannán Howth Sail: June 2016

Over the June bank holiday weekend, Manannán sailed from Dún Laoghaire to Howth, and stayed overnight in the Howth Scout Den before sailing home. The fleet consisted of Yahtzee, New Moon, Pandora, Rua, 2 RS Ventures from the N.Y.C. and a 1720 from the R.I.Y.C.

Howth Sailing Trip 4-5 June (Manannán)

Manannán will be going on a sailing weekend to Howth over the June bank holiday weekend, 4-5 June. We need confirmation of attendance on this trip by the meeting on Friday, 27 May.

Times:

We will be meeting in the Den at 1300 on Saturday 4 June, before sailing to Howth. We will overnight in Howth’s Scout Den, before sailing back to Dún Laoghaire via Ireland’s Eye on Sunday 5 June. We expect to be finished in the Den on Sunday at 1500.

Cost:

All Scouts must bring spending money of around €10 as we will be getting dinner in the chipper in Howth. There is no further cost for this trip.

 

Scouts are reminded that they must have done their Swim Test before this trip. If Scouts have any questions they should contact their Watch Leader.

Please note that this trip is entirely weather-permitting and is subject to cancellation.

Manannán meetings extended

Manannán News

As boatwork is now complete and the fleet certified for the year, Manannán will begin boating next Friday, 20 May. Please note that from now until the end of the boating season, Manannán meetings will run from 1900-2130.

In addition to full uniform as usual, all Scouts are required to bring boating gear every week, including: PFD, light waterproof jacket/’cag’, rash-vest/base-layer/old t-shirt, swimming shorts, boating shoes/booties/old runners that can get wet.

Any Scout who has not yet completed this year’s Swim Test will do it on Friday.

Our next activity will be our sailing weekend to Howth, on 4-5 June. More details will be provided closer to the time.
